A teal independent candidate has apologised after she was accused of making a sexual joke to a young hairdresser.

Independent candidate for Bradfield Nicolette Boele was at her local salon Envy Room in Gordon, on Sydney's North Shore, when she allegedly made the joke to a 19-year-old female staff member.

Boele allegedly told the hairdresser her hair wash "was amazing and I didn't even have sex with you", according to Ben Fordham Live on 2GB.

Boele is vying for the seat of Bradfield from the Liberals in the upcoming federal election.

The Bradfield seat, which encompasses Sydney suburbs Chatswood, Pymble and Killara, was held by now-retired Liberal MP Paul Fletcher from 2009.

Boele is now up against Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian for Bradfield.
