Woman killed after pole strikes car during highway crash

A woman has died and a man has been injured after a crash between a truck and a sedan caused a pole to fall onto another car in Melbourne's north.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are on the scene after a truck travelling north on the Hume Highway in Somerton collided with a red sedan about 7.45am today.

The truck rolled and then crashed into a pole, causing it to then fall onto a silver Honda travelling in the opposite direction.

Paramedics treated the female driver of the Honda, however she died at the scene.

The male truck driver was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Nobody else was injured in the collision.

An investigation into the crash is now underway.

There have been 269 lives lost on Victorian roads this year, compared to 271 at the same time in 2024.
