[VIDEO]: President of Finland Shows Up Biden

n any case, perhaps the meeting after that remark went well, as Biden didn’t really seem to grasp the insult thrown his way, though the meeting seems to have been a waste of time for Finland, as the White House makes it sound like the duo spent precious time addressing “climate change,” as if that’s the major issue right now:

[VIDEO]: President of Finland Shows Up Biden

Well, this video is a roller coaster. Watch what happens when President Niinistro, the president of Finland, drops a massive truth bomb of Biden:

Yeah, that didn’t go well for our president, Brandon. Since the two don’t exactly have booming voices, here’s what was said:

Biden, speaking on the current situation, said “You know my predecessor who sat in this seat, President Obama, used to say it would be alright if we left everything to the Nordic countries.”

Niinistö, responding, then said, “Well, we usually don’t start wars.”

Though that might not sound like an insult, but I think it was for two reasons. However, to be clear, it’s very possible that Niinistö was just trying to build on Biden’s joke, as that could make sense contextually. Still, for the reasons below, I think it was a humiliating remark meant to sneakily attack Biden and show the world what a fool he is.

The first is that, well, the US does start wars. Had Niinistö been smiling or jovial (he wasn’t), perhaps the quip wouldn’t need to be taken as a knock at America, particularly America under Obama, for starting wars like the one in Libya. The way he said it, he seemed to be remarking that Finland wouldn’t act like Obama, the man referenced.

The second is a bit more complex; it stems from Finland’s history of being invaded by Russia.

You see, back in 1940, the Soviet Union decided to prey on their smaller neighbor, Finland. So, Stalin sent army after army into the Finnish woods to seize land from the little country, which promptly chewed them up and spit them out, only losing in the face of massive Soviet numbers.

During that war, Finland, despite standing up for itself as Poland had stood up to the Nazis, wasn’t rescued by Western powers, nor was a war fought on its behalf. Rather, the West let the Soviets win.

By saying “we don’t start wars” in the context of a Russian invasion, Niinistö, was likely hinting back to that war, the Winter War, and implying that he thinks that, if Russia invades Finland,  the West won’t come to Finland’s rescue this time just as it didn’t come to Finland’s rescue last time.

Perhaps neither of those slights were meant, maybe the Finnish president was just trying to play along with the joke. However, given his demeanor, given the way he responded, I think there was an insult embedded in there, with at least one of  the two possible meanings described above being what he meant.

In any case, perhaps the meeting after that remark went well, as Biden didn’t really seem to grasp the insult thrown his way, though the meeting seems to have been a waste of time for Finland, as the White House makes it sound like the duo spent precious time addressing “climate change,” as if that’s the major issue right now:

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. met today with President of Finland Sauli Niinistö to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and ensuring strong defense and deterrence in northern Europe. The leaders also discussed ongoing transatlantic coordination to impose costs on Russia for its unprovoked and unjustified military invasion of Ukraine, and their respective efforts to provide security and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. The Presidents committed to start a process that would strengthen U.S.-Finnish security cooperation, which would be conducted in close consultation with other Nordic countries. The Presidents also discussed the importance of NATO’s Open Door policy. In addition, they discussed energy security and efforts to address climate change.
