A teen who murdered a beloved Melbourne GP has been jailed for 17 years for brutally stabbing an unarmed man.

A jury found he murdered doctor Ashley Gordon near his Doncaster home in Melbourne's north-east early on January 13, 2024.

The teen and a friend broke into the house about 4am, stealing shoes, headphones, laptops, a wallet and silver necklaces.

They went back to a nearby house party before returning to Gordon's house, planning to steal the Mercedes-Benz that was parked in the garage.

Gordon caught them as they tried to break in a second time, chasing the teens onto the street and then following them in his car.

He got out of the vehicle once they reached a nearby street and the doctor tried to restrain the then-16-year-old, telling him the police were on their way.

But the boy pulled out a knife and stabbed Gordon six times before leaving him to die on the ground.

Justice Fox described the murder as a brutal attack against an unarmed man as she sentenced the teen to 17 years' jail.
