Hours later, a man identified by police as 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis was arrested and taken to the hospital after he was allegedly beaten before his arrest.

Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole announced the charges this morning.

"This remains a deeply distressing matter, and our thoughts are firmly with Kumanjayi's family and loved ones," he said.

More to come.
