Melbourne's new Town Hall station revealed as Metro Tunnel construction finishes

The first glimpse into one of Melbourne's new train stations has been revealed as construction on the city's new Metro Tunnel has finally finished.

Town Hall station, which has taken eight years to complete, has been unveiled in pictures which show copious spaces with special details.

The station features a grand entrance hall below City Square with a roof supported by high columns shaped like huge tree branches.

It is up to 42m below the CBD under Swanston Street between Collins and Flinders Streets, with a main entrance in City Square.

Premier Jacinta Allen called it "he most complex rail infrastructure project in Victoria's history."

Chandelier lights designed and made in Melbourne are hung from the 10m ceiling above the platforms.

The entrance features artwork called Forever by Danie Mellor, honouring Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung women

The piece Barerarerungar by Maree Clarke across 30 glass panels is installed at the Federation Square entrance.

The colourful piece shows landscapes, significant scar trees and intricate line drawings inspired by possum skin cloak designs.

It acknowledges the traditional tanderrum ceremonies once held at the Town Hall Station site.

The new station includes a pedestrian underpass to Flinders Street Station via Campbell Arcade and Degraves Street subway, so passengers will be able to easily change between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without tapping off.

The station will have three main entrances at City Square, Federation Square and inside the new Town Hall Place development on Swanston Street.

Construction on Town Hall Station began in 2017 and took so long because it needed excavation as deep as a five storey building.Melbourne Metro Tunnel town hall station

The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and more modern trains, and five new stations.

Stations are Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac.

There are 27 escalators including the citys new longest, and 19 lifts.

Town Hall Station will open with the Metro Tunnel later this year.

The opening date of the entire Metro Tunnel is yet to be announced.

Sydney also has new Metro system which opened last year.
