Man with gel blaster sends Queensland school into lockdown

Hundreds of students and teachers at a south-east Queensland school were sent into lockdown this morning amid reports of a man with a potential firearm, which turned out to be a gel blaster.

Classes had only just begun at Loganlea State High School when the man was spotted "with what looked to be a firearm" near the school, Queensland police confirmed to nine.com.au.

This prompted the school's executive staff to issue a lockdown order, with students reporting staff and classmates took cover in the school hall and other buildings.

Police attended at around 9am, where they found a man on Neridah Street carrying a gel blaster.

The man has been arrested and no one was harmed in the incident.

The school's lockdown order has since been lifted and normal classes have resumed.

An email was sent to parents advising them that the lockdown was precautionary. An email sent to parents from the school confirmed everyone was safe and the lockdown was precautionary.

"I received information this morning that someone in the community had a gun," the email reads.

"I immediately put the school in lockdown and called 000.

"I can confirm that the police have notified me that they found this person, and they in fact had a gel blaster, not a gun.

"All staff and students are safe. The school is no longer in lock down and students have returned to normal."

Gel blasters are replica-type firearms that shoot a small pellet that has been soaked in water.

They are not prohibited in Queensland for people aged over 18, but given many look identical to real firearms there are laws on how they can be used in public.
