How Indonesia Deals With Pedophiles… Hey, Democrats, This Is How It’s Done!

Crime rates across the United States are skyrocketing as Democrats promote soft-on-crime district attorneys like Chesa Boudin in San Francisco, advocate for defunding the police, and put forth a Supreme Court nominee who prefers to give child predators a slap on the wrist for their offenses. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the government of Indonesia is taking the punishment of criminals to the other extreme.

According to a report by Reuters this morning, an Indonesian court has sided with prosecutors and has issued a death sentence to a former teacher at an Islamic school named Herry Wirawan, who raped thirteen school girls over a six-year period. Wirawan had originally been sentenced to life in prison, but prosecutors appealed.

Not only had prosecutors originally sought Wirawan’s execution, they had also asked for his genital castration. Because in Indonesia, they understand that going easy on pedophiles is a bad idea. Not only had Wirawan raped over a dozen girls as young as twelve-years-old, he had also impregnated eight of them.

The crimes committed by Wirawan are reminiscent of similar episodes we’ve seen in the U.S., and indeed some of those criminals have had the proverbial book thrown at them. Former Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for his numerous sexual assaults on various female athletes. But former Boston priest John Geoghan had sexually assaulted as many as 130 children yet was sentenced to only nine years behind bars, where ‘prison justice’ ultimately caught up with him when he was murdered by a fellow inmate.

The left laments the plight of women impregnated during rape and put forth aborting the resulting child as the solution while disregarding the consequences for the culprit. They hate the rape but go easy on the rapist. When was the last time you heard a Pro-Abortion activist calling for stricter penalties against rapists?

And of course, we now find ourselves in a renewed national debate regarding the proper punishment for pedophiles with the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Brown has handed down sentences as light as three months in prison for child pornography crimes. Additionally, Brown has stood by her record on sentences, and so too have her apologists in Congress and the media.

Therefore, compare the treatment of pedophiles from the two extremes, and consider the messages being sent. Where is there a stronger deterrent to those contemplating the assault of a child? Is a prospective child rapist more likely to take action in a country that might surgically remove his genitals or put him to death, or in a country that sends child pornographers to jail for a mere 90 days?

Should we be looking to model our criminal justice system after that of Indonesia? Probably not. But there are certainly lessons to be learned and wisdom to be observed. One such lesson is that not only is the old-fashioned approach to law and order still being practiced in certain parts of the world, but it’s also still embraced.
