'Biggest dilemma' facing Roosters over squad shake-up

The Mole: Spencer Leniu had a specific role at the Panthers and tore apart his rivals. Will that be the same at the Roosters?

'Biggest dilemma' facing Roosters over squad shake-up

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has gained one of the best strike weapons in the competition - but the big question is just what will he do with him?

Spencer Leniu has been sensational for the Panthers off the interchange weapon in recent seasons, turning games with his impact and aggression.

So does Robinson continue using the giant forward in the same role, or throw him in as a starting player?

That's the biggest dilemma facing the Roosters in the countdown to Vegas and beyond.

The Roosters have lost a lot of their depth from recent seasons, with Fletcher Baker (Broncos), Jaxson Paulo (Sea Eagles), Paul Momirovski (Leeds Rhinos), Drew Hutchison (Bulldogs), Jake Turpin (Bulldogs), Corey Allan (Dragons), Nathan Brown (Sea Eagles) all moving on.

When you consider the club's massive injury and suspension toll in the last few years, that could come back to bite them.

The only significant gain apart from Leniu is ex-Knights tryscoring freak Dom Young, who bagged 25 tries last season and looks primed for a long stay in the red, white and blue.

Sam Walker lost the halfback spot briefly last season but was at the helm when the Roosters made their late charge to the finals and also looked sharp in the opening round of trials.

His partnership with Luke Keary is the Roosters' trump card and few teams boast such an accomplished halves combination.

Popular front-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is entering his final season at the club and his team-mates will be motivated to send him out on a high note.

Hooker Brandon Smith took his time to find his feet last season after learning his trade in Melbourne but should give better value in 2024.

2024 gains: Dominic Young (Knights), Spencer Leniu (Panthers)

2024 losses: Fletcher Baker (Broncos), Jaxson Paulo (Sea Eagles), Paul Momirovski (Leeds Rhinos), Drew Hutchison (Bulldogs), Jake Turpin (Bulldogs), Corey Allan (Dragons), Nathan Brown (Sea Eagles, train and trial), Ben Thomas (unsigned).
