Australia's unemployment rate has remained steady despite employment falling by more than 53,000 people.

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained flat at 4.1 per cent in February, largely meeting economists' predictions.

The number of employed people fell by 53,000 while the number of unemployed people fell by 11,000.

Bjorn Jarvis, head of labour statistics at the ABS, said the rate of older workers returning to the job market was impacting figures.

"Fewer older workers returning to work in February contributed to the fall in employment this month, with lower levels of employment in the older age groups in February 2025 compared with 2024," Jarvis said.

"This follows higher levels of employment in these age groups in recent years, particularly in 2024, alongside growth in the employment-to-population ratio over the last few years.

"In contrast, we continue to see growth in employment for people aged between 15 and 54 over the year."

The participation rate - which measures Australians either working or actively seeking work - fell 0.4 per cent to 66.8 per cent.

"Despite the fall this month, the participation rate is still relatively high, having reached a historical high last month, and is 0.1 percentage points higher than this time last year," Jarvis said.
