5 classic New Years Eve Films for those of us who can’t bear to go outside…

We know, the covid talk is well and truly getting stale by now. But with this new Omicron variant out in force the prospect of moving around on New Year’s seems a little less than appealing. So why go out when you can sit at home in your PJ’s with a glass of bubbles and think of your sparkling plans for the pending year ahead. There are a variety of ways to celebrate without being led down the garden party path. Personally here we’re partial to a little journal resolution ritual, or indulging in some of our festive food favourites. Until January 1st, it’s still holiday time in our books.

But more than anything, one of the tried and true traditions is that of a classic movie marathon. So we must ask. As 2021 moves ahead into 2022 just what are the best New Year’s Eve classics to watch? Whether you’re a traditionalist basking in the sentimental favourites, or looking for something a little more unconventional we’ve got you well and truly covered.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

A classic and well deserved as the first on this list. The penultimate scene takes place at a New Years Eve party with Billy Crystal’s Harry relaying all his true, heart warming feelings to Meg Ryan’s Sally amid the nostalgic backing track of raceous of Auld Lang Syne. Come for New York, stay for the amazing perms and warm and fuzzy romance.

About Time (2013)

Another for the rom-com lovers. The ultimate do-over NYE flick. The main character here travels back in time to make up for a wrong turn with his lady love (Rachel McAdam’s). Once learning that all the men in his family have the ability to time travel, he goes back to a NYE where it all begun.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

No, not that one. But the original which in our book is even more classic. Featuring the rat-pack this film involves many New Year’s hijinks with a heist planned on the stroke of midnight. Grab a whiskey on the rocks and enjoy with suave revelry!

New Year’s Evil (1980)

If the classics aren’t for you consider this your excuse to make NYE your glorified Halloween. For all who enjoy a little horror, this film centres on a serial killer who calls into a televised NYE punk-rock show threatening to kill someone at midnight in each time zone of the continental US. Not for the faint of heart but hey, if you want a jolt to your 2022 system who are we to judge!

200 Cigarettes (1999)

A grossly underrated New Years film and one probably solely reserved for the late night Foxtel rotation. If you can get your hands on this one (it’s mostly reserved for DVD and specific streaming services) it’s a real treat. Taking place in the chaotic 1980’s New York metropolis, this film follows a star studded cast of the 90’s Hollywood who’s all of which are having the worst night ever. A fashion master piece if we do say ourselves – thank you young Christina Ricci.
