Teams: Cowboys coach swings the axe on star half

Todd Payten clearly wasn't impressed with his halfback's performance after the Cowboys were smashed by the Broncos.

Teams: Cowboys coach swings the axe on star half

North Queensland Cowboys coach Todd Payten has swung the axe with Chad Townsend dropped to the reserves and Jake Clifford taking his place.

Payten's decision comes after the Cowboys lost 42-18 to the Broncos.

Townsend won't be at the Cowboys next year after signing with the Roosters and has been replaced by Jake Clifford who hasn't played first grade since round 17.

Penrith could receive a major boost for their highly anticipated clash against the Storm with Dylan Edwards named in the reserves.

The superstar fullback hasn't played since Origin III when he suffered a PCL injury.

Isaiah Iongi and Daine Laurie have played fullback in the 28-year-old's absence but if Edwards returns it will be significant for the Panthers with the chance they could go equal first with the Storm.

Meanwhile, the Broncos may have the bye but have suffered some awful news around star fullback Reece Walsh.

The 22-year-old has a metacarpal fracture in his hand with the club consulting a specialist before determining how long he'll be out.https://twitter.com/AdamJackson_9/status/1823218615602078080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
