Premiership hero chasing historic double in 'busy' week

Broncos NRLW coach Scott Prince says Brisbane's focus is on balance as the club aims to make history on Sunday.

With two victories at Accor Stadium, the Broncos would become the first club ever to secure both the men's and women's premierships in a single, unprecedented season.

The Broncos are into the NRLW decider for the first time since 2020, which was the last year of their incredible run of three consecutive premierships to start the women's competition.

Given the unique situation, Prince told Nine's Freddy and the Eighth that the club is managing the massive logistical challenge of getting both teams ready for their respective grand finals.

"It has been quite busy," he said.

"Over the last 24 hours, I know the staff at the Broncos have been working overtime, trying to make sure that both teams are fully taken care of regarding the plans for the week, training venues, ticketing and accommodation.

"The club's on top of things."

Prince knows what grand final week is all about, albeit this is his first as a coach.

The former champion halfback will on Sunday celebrate the 20-year anniversary of his famous NRL premiership victory with the Wests Tigers.

Despite the chaos of grand final week, the Broncos have maintained a focused mindset, approaching their preparation day by day.

Prince notes that while it's vital to "enjoy the week," his players know exactly when they need to lock in and focus, especially given the massive stakes of Sunday's game.Broncos NRLW coach Scott Prince watches on during the warm up before the preliminary final against the Newcastle Knights.

Last Sunday, the women's team kicked things off by beating the Knights 30-6 in their preliminary final, setting the tone for the men's side, who later roared back from 14-0 down to defeat the Panthers and secure their grand final spot.

"I'm still coming down from the win over the weekend," Prince said.

"It's been quite some time [since we last made the grand final], we found ourselves in the prelim a couple of years in a row, and we just couldn't quite get over that hump.

"The girls did a fantastic job up against a pretty hot and strong Newcastle outfit.

"Very pleased to get the win, and now we enjoy what grand final week is all about and then come Sunday, we're up against a bit of a force."

The Broncos meet the Roosters in Sunday's decider.NRLW Highlights: Broncos v Roosters - Round 3

The Roosters have had a flawless season as the reigning premiers, going through undefeated.

Yet Brisbane will likely go into the match as the favourite, with Tricolours star Tarryn Aiken sidelined with injury.

The sides have only met once this year, in round three, which went the way of the Roosters, 30-26.

That victory was built on a double from Olivia Kernick and a perfect five-from-five conversion effort from Jocelyn Kelleher.

Prince acknowledged the Roosters' dynasty is much-deserved and admitted that the Broncos must be at their absolute best on Sunday to break it.

"The Roosters are a weapon side, they've got strike right across the park," he said.Isabelle Kelly of the Roosters and Roosters head coach John Strange pose with the premiership trophy.

"They use a lot of their power and strength through the middle, their centres in particular, with Jess Sergis and Isabelle Kelly — they rely heavily on them when they are going forward, and they're obviously attacking weapons on an edge.

"To have 18 wins on the trot is a mean feat for them, and it's going to take a really good performance to get the W on Sunday."

In the preliminary final, the Knights were no match for the Tamika Upton-led Broncos.

The two-time Dally M medallist is the key for the Broncos with the ability to single-handedly break open the grand final.

"She's so balanced, and her vision, she is a step ahead of everyone else out there on the park," Prince said.

"Her movement is all a hop, skip and a jump, and those half-chances, when you've got a player like that that can sniff it out and pre-empt them.Upton pips teammate for Dally M Medal

"To have half a chance and turn that into points, that's certainly a special player to do that."

After departing the Knights, Upton rejoined the Broncos this season to continue her premiership quest back in familiar colours.

"She comes in with what she wants and desires in a football team, and she's a winner," he said.

"Anything less than that, she's very disappointed, and she'll let you know."

With a win, the Roosters can tie the Broncos with three NRLW premierships apiece.

The match gets underway at 3:55pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
