Smith lifts lid on V'landys call after Kangaroos snub

Cameron Smith has provided an insight into his phone call with Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys with Kevin Walters set to be named Kangaroos coach.

Smith was interested in the role, but interestingly when his name was first thrown up, he hadn't been approached by the NRL.

The former Kangaroos skipper confirmed there was never a "formal approach" or interview for him to be coach but he did take a call from V'landys once the Walters decision was ready to move forward.

"He gave me a phone call to let me know the decision was made to go with Kev and that was about it," Smith said on Nine's 100% Footy.

"I'm happy with that decision, I respect that decision.

"If I had an opportunity to put my case forward I would've but the decision was made by the game's hierachy to go with Kevvie and I think it's a great appointment."

While Walters' appointment hasn't been made official yet, the speculation will now turn to who his assistant coaches will be.

Former coach Mal Meninga was recently assisted by Justin Holbrook and Brett White.

Smith confirmed V'landys did mention a possible assistant role to him.

"That could be possibly something to look at but I haven't had any further discussions with Peter or Andrew Abdo or anyone in the NRL about that," he said.
