Snow resorts in NSW and Victoria have been hit with a massive snow dump as ski enthusiasts gear up to hit the slopes during the school holidays.

In Victoria, Falls Creek saw a massive fall of 22cm of fresh, dry snow, with a depth of 80cm on average.

"An average of 22 cm of fresh, dry snow in the last 24hrs and it is still coming down thick and fast," the Falls Creek website reads.

"Temps are still hovering around minus 3 degrees with a wind chill of -6.8. This storm is really delivering! Dress for cold conditions.

"The visibility is average currently, and there is a lot of wind drifting.

"There will be some good turns to be had today. Watch your step out there and enjoy some fresh tracks."

Mount Hotham received 19cm in the 24 hours to this morning and it was still coming down at 6am, while Mount Buller had 17cm and a feels-like temperature of -10.3 degrees.

In NSW, Perisher has been hit with 12cm of snowfall overnight, with temperatures dropping to -2.4 degrees.

"The snow has well and truly arrived with 12cm overnight and blizzard-like conditions continuing today, it's dumping and there's plenty more on the way," the Perisher website said.

"Please note that with great snowfall often comes great wind, and today is no exception as strong north-westerly winds are expected to keep up throughout the day."

Guests have been told to keep an eye on the life reports as strong winds and icy temperatures could spell trouble for ski-lift operations.

Thredbo welcomed 20cm in the 24 hours to this morning and also warned of strong winds of up to 61km/h.

The falls came after a strong cold front moved over the Alpine region, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The front will also bring strong, severe, damaging winds to the area and other regions in NSW.

Impacted areas will include Newcastle, Wollongong, Nowra, Sydney Airport, Goulburn, Maitland, Bowral, Katoomba, Campbelltown, Braidwood, Kiama, Ulladulla and Lithgow.

Snowfall is expected to continue today with very high chances of snow showers in Perisher and Thredbo.
