Reborn Origin star set for market amid salary cap squeeze

Gehamat Shibasaki is without doubt the fairytale story of 2025 - but it could all end in tears for his beloved Broncos.

The journeyman centre, who came from the clouds to win a contract with the Broncos and then a Queensland State of Origin jersey, is a free agent on November 1 and has yet to receive a formal offer from the club.

The Broncos want to keep the much-improved 27-year-old on their books, but are believed to have salary cap problems after signing several of their big names to long-term deals.

Shibasaki's manager has been inundated with interest from rival clubs, with a shortage of quality centres throughout the NRL.

"Gehamat loves the Broncos after the season he has had and is contracted to them for next season," his manager Wade Rushton told Wide World of Sports.

"But they haven't been able to make him an offer beyond that and so on November 1, I'm expecting quite a few clubs to show formal interest.

"He's had a fantastic year and is a great story - and he will keep working hard on his game."

The Broncos have already been forced to release two members of their squad - Tyson Smoothy (Trinity Wakefield) and Selwyn Cobbo (Dolphins) - due to the salary cap squeeze.

Several other players, including consistent forwards Kobe Hetherington Jack Gosiewski and Corey Jensen, are also set to come onto the open market come November 1.
