'Enough is enough': Melbourne police brace for heavy delays with four protests set for today
Melbourne's CBD is set for heavy disruptions this weekend with four protests set to take to the streets today.
With far-right and far-left groups set to converge, police have been granted additional powers to preempt any potential violence.
Until 8pm on Sunday, Melbourne police are allowed to conduct weapon searches and direct individuals to remove face coverings.
Extra police force will also be deployed in the city's centre as officials fear that the demonstrations could escalate into violence on the streets.
The increase in police presence is a direct response to a violent clash that occurred in the streets two weeks ago.
Melbourne's Lord Mayor Nick Reece voiced his disdain for the demonstrations, stating that Melbourne locals, as well as himself, are "fed up."
"Melbourne is starting to look like bar scene from Star Wars, and enough is enough," he told Weekend Today.
Those heading into the the city's CBD are urged to reconsider their travel plans as significant traffic disruptions are set for this weekend.
