Carey to reunite with North teammates despite celebration snub

North Melbourne great Wayne Carey is set to attend the Kangaroos' centenary match later this season, reuniting with ex-teammates.

The dual premiership captain was previously left out of a video marking the club's centennial celebrations

Carey is set to join former teammates, including Anthony Stevens and Glenn Archer, to cheer on North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium in the club's signature clash against the Western Bulldogs in round 17.

It is understood that there have been discussions and efforts by the club to have all three present as a united front for the centenary celebrations.

Players from the 1975, '77, '96 and '99 premiership sides, as well as members of last year's AFLW premiership-winning team, will be invited to attend.

While the match will commemorate 100 years since North Melbourne entered the VFL/AFL competition, it will mark the first time that Carey, Stevens and Archer have connected since the former's messy exit from the club.

Carey infamously had an affair with Stevens' wife, Kelli, in 2002, which tore the club apart.

The affair became public after the pair was spotted together at a party at Archer's house, with the fallout deeply impacting the relationships between the three men.

The news comes after Carey was a glaring omission from a promotional video for the centenary, which was shared on the club's social media channels last November.https://twitter.com/NMFCOfficial/status/1857196925159985580?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

The video showcased many variations of the club's blue and white strip from the past 100 years and revealed its centenary guernsey.

Players will wear the guernsey in round 17. The centenary-themed home fixture was originally pencilled in for round 20 against Geelong.

The video featured the likes of Ben Cunnington, Drew Petrie, Daniel Wells, David King, Brent Harvey, Ron Barassi and John Longmire — but Carey was left out.

It was reported that Carey had been exiled by the club; however, in a social media post on Wednesday, the 53-year-old clarified that that was not the case.

"Just for what it's worth, I've gone to at least 10 big functions over the last 25 years," he wrote on X alongside a smiling face emoji.

Tensions have occasionally resurfaced between Carey and Stevens, even at previous club reunions, despite attempts at reconciliation.

Carey's off-field legacy is also clouded with domestic violence allegations and a charge of indecent assault in 1997.

Carey was accused of allegedly breaking a wine glass over former partner Kate Neilson while on holiday in Miami in 2007.

Carey was arrested and charged with assaulting police officers and resisting arrest at the scene.

Neilson did not press charges against Carey for the alleged glassing but later said the incident left her "bleeding profusely" from cuts to her mouth and neck.
